What are meteor showers?

A meteor shower is when there is an increase in the number of meteors at a particular time of year. There are several reoccuring meteor showers that occur in the northern hemisphere. As comets orbit the Sun, they shed an icy, dusty debris field along the comet's orbit. If Earth crosses their field, we will see a meteor shower. Meteor showers are named by the constellation from which meteors appear to fall from i.e. in October every year there are the Orionids meteor showers. These will originate from the constellation Orion.
