Characteristics:

This grouper is characterized by it's large head & large rosy to red body.  The color can vary depending on the age and water depth.

Locations:

These are not as common in the northern sea of cortez, but are common bottom fish throughout the lower Sea.  This fish is usually found in depths exceeding 150 ft to 300 ft.

Finescale Triggerfish

Characteristics:

This deep-bodied triggerfish can be distinguished by its closely pack teeth & the absence of longitudinal ridges on the posterior part of the body. As it name implies, it's fine scales & a drab pattern distinguish this species from other gulf triggerfish.

Locations:

This fish has a wide range from northern California to Chile.  They are found in abundance in the upper & central Sea of Cortez.  This species occurs over rocky & sandy bottoms, inshore & offshore.

Gold Spotted Sand Bass

Characteristics:

The elongated third dorsal spine distinguishes this species from other sea bass.  Their body and fins have vertical bars diffussed in black, brown & orange spots.  This fish will have 6 to 7 of these strips.

Locations:

This fish ranges from central California to central Mexico.  They can be found throughout the Sea of Cortez & are very common in the upper portion.  They prefer low profile reefs next to sandy bottoms in depths up to 200 ft.

Gulf Grouper

Characteristics:

The genus is characterized by small embedded scales. The largest member of this genus can be distinguished by its low total number of gill rakers on the first arch. Adults are grayish overall with large dusky blotches.

Locations:

They roam along the bottom over rocks & sand, moving closer inshore in the evenings & mornings. This is the most common large grouper in the upper & central Cortez, but rarely found south of Mazatlan.

Leopard Grouper

Characteristics:

The head, body & fins are covered with small reddish brown spots over a greenish to grayish brown background.

Locations:

This is a shallow water predator that gathers over rocky areas.  Immediately after sunset, they begin to feed on flatiron herring & anchovies

Spotted Cabrilla

Characteristics:

This is a medium-sized grouper. Some of its distinguishing traits are: 10 dorsal spines, rounded caudal fin and numerous dark spots and broad dusky bars covering its body.  Its overall color is reddish brown with large dark brown spots.

Locations:

This spotted cabrilla ranges from southern California the Peru.  This is the most abundant grouper in the upper Sea of Cortez. They can be found out at the 41 mile reefs as they prefer offshore reefs in moderate depths.
