With over 900 islands and many more volcanic coves and waters filled with thousands of different marine species, the northern sea of Cortez has become one of Mexico's most popular diving destinations. For the snorkelers in the group, those who are looking for a day trip, San Jorge Island is the best choice. Some of the varieties of marine life can only be found in this sea, thus it is a delight for those naturalist.
For those interested in diving, the San Carlos area is said to have better waters. We are at the top of the sea of Cortez and our waters are rich in nutrients, thus the visibility is minimum. Bird Island is located southwest of rocky point. The island boast a population of 3600 sea lions as well as a wide varity of birds. Snorkeling, kayaking and swimming in the area is a popular eco tour. In general most trips are 3-4 hours.

If you ever wanted to visit Mother Nature's version of Sea World, just take a trip out to "Bird Island", 25 miles southeast of the city. Here at this local spot thousands of sea lions gather. So what kind are they? Well first off, there are 5 different kinds throughout the world. This specific species is known as the California Sea Lion. This variety inhabits much of the Pacific coast from Canada all the way down the islands off of Ecuador.
These cute mammals will perform all the spins, dives & tricks all to get your attention. As you motor along in the water, they will be following in the wake, chasing each other and playing just like those in San Diego. Of course, the pups always seem to be the most playful and wanting attention. However the grown parents can become quite large. A grown male can reach up to 7-8 feet in length and well over 600 pounds in weight, while the female is usually several feet shorter and a third the weight.
Unlucky for the sea lion, their natural enemy is the shark & killer whale. At Bird Island, you can swim with the sea lions and experience their youthful jubilance's of their circus acts. Spending an afternoon with thousands of these creatures can give you memories of a life time, So come see!
